‘I’m in love with the cocoa’ Natural substitute for dry-shampoo

Hey guys!

Recently I have spoken a lot about hair growth and products, such as methods of how to help grow hair and also trying the ‘no-poo’ method. As well as cutting out shampoo I have also found a non-chemical alternative to dry-shampoo.

I have rather dark hair, this means I struggled with usual dry-shampoo to begin with, I found one for dark hair, but this problem arose again when I was looking for a natural alternative.

Today I am going to show you my home-made dry-shampoo that was really easy to make.

I had a look online for different methods to use. I recognised that ‘cornstarch’ and ‘arrowroot’ came up a lot. I personally went for arrow because it is high in vitamins, minerals, and boosts levels of copper, iron, calcium and fibre, it also has thickening qualities (which helps take away the greasy look by adding volume to your hair) and is not taken from a genetically modified corn (unlike cornstarch).

Before use

My hair looks quite wet and heavy.

Mainly put on the roots, leave in. you can use an old make-up brush to do this or even your hands (be careful not to get the cocoa powder everywhere)

(Smelling like chocolate and loving it)

Post-dry shampoo

Left to soak up the natural oils in the hair then massaged to blend it in. Now my hair has a lot more volume and looks noticably less greasy.

I added cocoa powder to mine because I have dark hair, but if you have blonde or lighter hair, you can use just arrow root on its own.

  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot/cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 5 drops of essential oil of choice (I used lavender to give it an extra nice smell)

I have loved using this and find it better than usual chemical based dry-shampoo, because I only need to apply once between washes and my hair doesn’t look greasy again after that before I wash it.

Have you tried any alternatives to dry-shampoo? what did you think? let me know!

  1. Wow what a great idea! I’m definitely going to have to give this a try! I read an awful article about the stuff that went into dry shampoos like Batiste etc so I avoid them at all costs. So great to hear of a natural option that you can make yourself! x

    1. It is a shame because I used to LOVE batiste and thing it was Gods gift, but when I started looking into the stuff that goes into the products I used I was really shocked how bad they are for you! But this is super easy to make and it is nice to know what is going on your body. I also likd that you can alter it for both dark and light hair 😊 x
